Groceries

A few disclaimers before I reveal the hideous amount I have been spending on groceries. First, the amount includes everything we buy at the grocery store, not just edible items i.e. diapers, toilet tissue, facial tissue, cleaners etc. Second, grocery prices are higher in Canada than in the US... a few examples: 2 L of milk = $3.49. Bananas typically go for $1.29 per lb. Third, I have been extremely ill in the last week and so have been buying convenience foods. Ok, enough with the disclaimers. So far in January, I am spending a shocking $25.93 per DAY on food to feed a family of 2.6 adults (I count 0.4 for Chaos and 0.2 for Confusion). Ridiculous. Irresponsible. Now I know... time to change.

  1. I just asked my husband who does the shopping how much we spend on 2 adults and 1 7 year old...$40/day! Why say it is irresponsible? I think getting good food is so important. Unless you are wasting it, throwing a lot of it away, all is well in my book. I am a thrifty person in all areas of my life but food:)

  2. Do you eat all of it or you throw away a lot? If you eat it, i do not see a problem. It is $10 per person and your examples are twice the price what i pay here in USD, so your spending is an equivalent of ~5USD a person a day, which is 35USD a week and for example i certainly spend more than that on food in a week (now that i have a job and car, i used to spend way less when i had neither)

@AM, $40/day, holy molly, is it because you buy a lot or because you buy expensive?

    1. maybe the words ridiculous and irreponsible were a bit knee jerkish. I guess I don't feel like we are eating quality food and when I think I am spending $26 per day on it, it makes me think I really could and should do better. We eat a ton of processed stuff. Tons of sugar - sugary cereal, sugary juices. We need more veg and healthy oils. As for throwing things away, we're doing much better. I still do waste some food (which I know is terrible) but we are doing better than we used to. I can assure you we don't waste any ice cream!!

  3. Monyka, we eat a ton of fruits and veggies and try to get organic. We eat very little meat, which tends to be expensive. We also very rarely eat out, like maybe twice a year. But, the 3 of us eat a lot of food. We go through about 10 bags of spinach a week, pints of blueberries, cartons of cottage cheese, tons of eggs, lots of nuts and good dark chocolate (hm, maybe this is what makes the bill so large, ha!). If you think about it, it is like 13.33 per person per day....so really not that much.

    1. 10 bags of spinach per week? I am totally impressed! Good job! How do you do it? Do you just eat it raw or put it in recipes? How do you go through 10 bags? Your diet sounds like it comes straight out of the cancer prevention guidelines. Good job!! I would happily spend $40 per day if we were eating as healthfully as you guys.
